These flowers are Mexican Sunflowers (reported to me, I didn’t verify). They were planted by my beekeeping partner Jim to attract and feed our honeybees. Although there were a few bees, most of the bumble variety, the flowers were loaded with Monarch butterflies. For my photog friends:I know that it looks like I “Lightroomed” the stink out of this photo, but not really. I took several different shots at various angles, which made the farmer who owned the mailbox get in his truck and come down to figure out what was going on. At first, he was pretty skeptical. This female moose and he calf were feeding in a small lake off the road in Rocky Mountain National Park. I was about 100 yards away, and knowing that moose can be pretty temperamental, was glad to have the right equipment for the shot. So much so that I originally went to college to study photography. I also spent three years as the Photo Editor of Western Michigan University’s student newspaper, the Western Herald. During that time I developed a passion for photojournalism, and especially street photography. Then, two things happened. First, I discovered that although my first love was photography, it was clear that I wouldn't make a living off of it. Second, I couldn't get a good enough grade in Nude Drawing 2 to move on in my Photography program. So, I changed my major, went on through Graduate School, and spent the next 30some years in Higher Education. Fast forward to November of 2015 when I retired and looked up my old lover Photography. So here we are together again. I'm a lot older, she's a lot wiser, hipper, and gotten WAY more complicated to be around. But to spite all of her new traits, we're giving it another go.
